A Short Biography of Randal Morton


Randal Morton was born in Memphis, Tennessee.  He began to play the banjo when he was around 12 years of age.  His brother, Greg Morton, began to play the guitar at about the same time.  Randal and Greg were headliners at various bluegrass festivals around the country.

Randal's natural musical ability allowed him to quickly develop a mastery of the five-string banjo.  He won the Midsouth Banjo Championship in Memphis.  In 1975, Randal Morton won the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship in Winfield, Kansas.

Randal traveled around the world as a member of the USO.  At one point, he was a member of Don Ho's band in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Randal Morton performs regularly with a local band called GrassFire.

Randal also gives bluegrass banjo and guitar lessons.

1:15-1:45 PM : Randal Morton will be conducting a Banjo Workshop for the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival on 1195 Main St. (outside stage) featuring a variety of music styles on the banjo.
4:30-5:15 PM : Randal will be performing with Devil Train (Gypsy/Jazz/blues/bluegrass).(outside stage)
7:15-7:45 PM : Randal will perform with Grassfire (progressive bluegrass)(inside stage for the Center for Southern Folklore at 1195 Main St.)

Randal Morton is the best banjo player EVER. Here are a few keywords, Tennessee Kentucky bluegrass music, and flat pick guitar championship.
